Tips to Treat the Separation Anxiety Problem in Your Dog Sometimes pet dogs get anxious when they get separated from their owners. They express this anxiety by barking, whining, escaping or even indulging in destructive behaviors. This article offers a few tips to help you deal with the separation anxiety problem with your dog. • Behave frequently as if you are going to leave but do not leave actually. Get your car keys and your coat, for instance, but then sit down. Do this several times in a day.
• Leave initially for short periods of time, starting with 5 or 10 minutes and stay within earshot. When you re-enter praise it for its good behavior while you were gone.
• Gradually increase the amount of time that you stay away. This will accustom your dog to your absence.
• Avoid overly emotional good-byes and greetings. Instead, pat your dog on the head and offer a quick good-bye or hello.
• Leave an article of clothing or a blanket or towel out so your dog can pick up your scent while you are gone. This can help to comfort the dog.
• Keep your dog confined in a safe area while you are away. Try leaving the radio or TV on while you are gone. Also, give your dog a hard rubber chew toy or Nylabone to keep it busy.
• Take your dog for exercise every day for an hour in places other than your yard or home. This helps your dog feel comfortable in other locations and lets her blow off steam.
• Praise your dog often to build self-confidence, rather than punishing it for exhibiting frightened behaviors. Punishment only increases anxiety and makes the situation worse. The tips mentioned above should help you to deal with the separation anxiety problem with your dog. In case your dog’s condition does not improve, you can consult a veterinarian to get a correct diagnosis of the problem. The veterinarian can help you with treatment or refer you to an animal behaviorist who can prescribe effective drug therapies to alleviate your dog's separation anxiety issues. Here are some helpful links: 1.Dog Grooming 2.Dog Breeds 3.Dog Health
